After Sierra Leone gained independence from the colonialists, the government in Freetown decided to give the natives their leaders through voting. From 1961 to 1978, there was a political party in Sierra Leone called the Sierra Leone Peopleââ¬â¢s party (SLPP). The SLPP was a governing party in the year 1961 to 1967; however, it later became the opposition party from year 1967 to 1978.
